Sumika Polymer Compounds is widely recognised as a leader in the technology of mineral filled and chemically coupled, glass fibre reinforced polypropylene.
The Thermofil range exists of engineering grades based on a wide variety of mineral fillers and other speciality reinforcements - including high temperature and chemically resistant low warp grades for metal replacement applications.
Thermofil NP™
- Thermofil NP™ is a lightweight, wood natural fibre filled PP which is ideal for applications where weight matters. This compound range combines the strength of polypropylene with the natural touch of wood fibres.
- Thermofil NP™ is an effective alternative to talc-filled PP. It offers comparable or superior mechanical properties, including stiffness and strength, while providing better impact resistance than talc-filled PP grades.Compared to glass fiber-filled PP,
- Thermofil NP™ offers better warp control and lower energy consumption during processing. It also causes less machine and tool wear, providing cost benefits in manufacturing.
Thermofil HP®
- Thermofil HP® is a high-performance, short glass fibre reinforced PP designed for structural parts. This cutting-edge compound ensures strength and durability, making it an ideal choice for applications where structural integrity is paramount.
- Thermofil HP®'s lightweight design offers enhanced design freedom and performance, improving electric range, balancing extra battery weight, and boosting overall vehicle performance.
- This compound offers significant CO₂ reduction through its lower environmental impact compared to traditional engineering plastics, easy recyclability, and local supply chain optimisation.
Thermofil® FR
- Thermofil® FR meets certified flame retardancy standards. It serves as an effective substitute for flame retardant polyamides (FR-PA). The product demonstrates high flame retardant performance even at low thicknesses.
- This compound offers significant design freedom. It provides a wide range of colour options. Thermofil® FR can be UV stabilised and is suitable for laser marking.
- Thermofil® FR is a lightweight solution, offering 10% weight reduction compared to FR-PA. It contributes to CO₂ reduction, with 50% CO₂ savings versus FR-PA6. Halogen-free options are available for enhanced environmental safety.
Thermofil Circle®
- Thermofil® Circle is a range of circular, recycled polypropylene compounds. Designed to minimise environmental impact while maintaining high-quality performance, this sustainable solution is a testament to Sumika’s commitment to a greener future.
- Despite being a recycled product, Thermofil® Circle maintains high mechanical properties, offering performance comparable to virgin materials, making it suitable for demanding applications.
- Thermofil® Circle significantly reduces CO₂ emissions by up to 75% compared to traditional materials, supporting circular economy initiatives through its high recycled content and low environmental impact.
Examples of applications are:
- Automotive: high temperature and high toughness under-hood components – replacing glass fibre polyamide and polyester whilst delivering substantial weight reduction.
- Appliances: dynamically stressed components such as structural drums for front loading washing machines with detergent resistance accredited to UL® standards.
- Engineering: fast cycling grades for thick wall applications in air movement fans and chemical plant - including grades specially modified for structural foam moulding.
